Arginine has become a very popular supplement in the past several years for its cardiovascular benefits. Arginine however, is an amino acid that assist the body in many different ways, such as ammonia detoxification, hormone secretion and assisting the function of macrophages. Macrophages are the first cells to attack infected cells at the site of an infection. They eat infected cells and communicate with the immune system so that other immune fighting cells will arrive at the infected area. Without arginine this immune process would be impeded.
