Blood Clot in the LegPulmonary embolism is a serious medical condition characterized by blood clots inside a lung artery.  These blood clots usually come from the legs and travel to the lung.

Blood clots in the legs are referred to as deep vein thrombosis in the medical community. These blood clots can break away and then travel to other parts of the body and can impede or block blood flow causing permanent damage. Pulmonary embolism left untreated can be deadly. 30% of those who have this medical condition will die from tissue damage or other health complications.

Having a sedentary lifestyle or sitting for long periods of time can contribute to developing deep vein thrombosis. Other risk factors for deep vein thrombosis include smoking, using oral contraceptives, estrogen replacement therapy in being over 40. Deep vein thrombosis is the precursor that leads to a pulmonary embolism.

The Right Supplements

Your health is very important and that becomes obvious when it seems to be lacking.  What can we do to make sure we keep ourselves in optimal shape?  Well, we could start by making sure we are adding the right vitamins and minerals to our diet.  Not many people truly understand the importance of finding the right supplements.  Many people will just opt in for a multivitamin and leave it at that, but that really isn’t the best choice for health.  To make a wise choice regarding supplements lets start with education.

Are You Lacking?

vitamins in our dietIf you are lacking in the vitamin department, the first place to look is at our diet.  Running to the store to buy a supplement is not an actual substitute for a healthy diet.  Most of the nutrients you need can be found in food. Do a little research in order to figure out what changes need to be made in your diet for optimal health.

Nothing really takes the place of consuming a balanced, nutritious diet.  Look to make sure that you vary your diet to receive the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Try getting between five and seven portions worth of fresh produce daily, along with small protein portions. Supplements can make up for anything you are missing.

Mom Always Said Eat Your Veggies

Avacado healthy fruitThe best source of vitamins and minerals are fresh fruit and vegetables. Making sure that you eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruit every day can help ensure you get all of the vitamins and minerals you need to be healthy. For the best results, eat them raw or very lightly cooked by steaming or poaching.

The Right Vitamin E

There are a lot of benefits for men to take vitamin E, but women need it as well. Vitamin E has anti-aging benefits and will help battle cell damage that is related to aging. Vitamin E also can prevent cataracts and heart disease. Almonds, hazelnuts, spinach and sunflower seeds are all rich in Vitamin E. Go for a full spectrum Vitamin E and stay away from the man-made form of this supplement.

If you are post-menopausal, don’t take prenatal vitamins. Sometimes, women will take these vitamins to help make their nails and hair grow longer.   (The amino acid arginine is known to help hair and nails.) Although this is not normally problematic, they include higher levels of iron than necessary for women who are post-menopausal.

Citrus is Good for You!

fruit have vitamin CMany citrus fruits and also vegetables contain that valuable vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts the immune system to fight off such diverse problems as the common cold, skin problems, acne, infections, gum disease and more. There have also been studies done that show vitamin C has assisted patients with ADHD, Alzheimer’s, and dementia.
